★ ★ ★ ★ - Great
Collected score:
43/55
The return of arguably one of the best rock bands of this day and age. Fans have waited years for this album, and it has finally come around; and it didn't disappoint. With this album, the band brings back the loved grunge/ hard rock sound that we all love. The entire album was recorded entirely on analog tape in frontman Dave Grohl's garage. The album is a masterpiece from start to finish.
1. "Bridge Burning"
Holy Visage rates this song: ★ ★ ★ ★ ★
The album opens with an epic track of loud guitar riffs, heavy drums, and outstanding vocals and screaming. With this opening-track we have learned that this rock band doesn't halfway compose any song. This song is the perfect definition of a hard-rock song. Lyrically, this song sarcastically critiques a self-destructive person who's burning his relational bridges; hinting that blasting away at those bridges may not be the best of ideas. Arguably the best track on this album, this song opens the album in superlative fashion, and is definitely one of our favorite tracks on the album.
2. "Rope"
Holy Visage rates this song: ★ ★ ★ ★ ★
Another solid work of art by this band, this track slows things down a little after the heavy opening track. The song speaks of a desperate man clinging to a relationship that stabilizes him, saying that when his love is away, he comes out of his head. The song contains one of the best bridges of rock music history, and by far the best on the album. When the bridge begins and continues, you forget what song you're listening to, as it takes you to a completely different pace and volume. This song is another solid track by this rock band.
3. "Dear Rosemary"
Holy Visage rates this song: ★ ★ ★ ★ ★
This track is wonderfully composed with pure vocals by frontman Dave Grohl and flawless drum beats and bass grooves. Listening to the song, we get a sense of darkness, from both the instruments and the lyrics, where dark suggestions permeate this song. It appears to speak as a message to a beloved, but decieving, woman who has passed. The song continues to talk about this woman in past tense, adding weight to the interpretation that the song's antagonist responded to his grief by murdering the one who caused it. Musically speaking, this song is geniusly composed, and is definitely one of our favorite tracks on the album, if not our favorite.
4. "White Limo"
Holy Visage rates this song: ★ ★ ★ ★
This song brings back the heaviness of the opening track, but maybe at a higher intensity. This song is definitely the most aggresive track on the album, with consistent screaming by frontman Dave Grohl, heavy guitar riffs, clashing drums, and a fast-tempo. Adding to the intensity, the lyrics are accompanied with occasional profanity. Regardless of the confusing and random lyrics, this song is a must-hear for hard-rock enthusiasts.
5. "Arlandria"
Holy Visage rates this song: ★ ★ ★ ★ ★
Arguably the best track on this album. The song opens with a perfect arrangement of instruments, and then goes to a near silence, with soft guitar playing behind frontman Dave Grohl's vocals. The song speaks of a troubled romance, finding a man begging in prayer for release from his emotional anguish. If you only hear one song from this album, may we recommend it be this track. This song is yet another work of art by this band, and is easily one of our favorites, if not favorite, from this album.
6. "These Days"
Holy Visage rates this song: ★ ★ ★ ★
Reminiscent of the earlier years' work of this band, this song is definitely one of the better songs on this album. Lyrically, the song seems to unleash a large amount of anger in the chorus. In the verses, however, the song reminds us of death's inevitability. This song has the elegance and perfection to bring a listener to tears. An absolute must-hear from this album, it is yet another geniusly composed song from this band.
7. "Back & Forth"
Holy Visage rates this song: ★ ★ ★
This track brings back the hard-rock edge that we all love. A fast-tempo, loud guitars, heavy drums, and solid, aggressive vocals by frontman Dave Grohl make this song irresistible for hard-rock lovers. The pre-chorus is reminiscent of the grunge days, with heavy guitars and lazy vocals. The song appraises the reality of aging and desires for authentic conversation instead of easy answers, even if that conversation requires controversy. This song is a great peice of this album.
8. "Matter of Time"
Holy Visage rates this song: ★ ★
This track continues the fast-pace of the album. This song isn't one of our favorite tracks on the album, but yet it still stands as a great track from this band, proving that it's most likely impossible for this band to compose a worthless track. Lyrically, the song shares anger and fore-warnings. Another great hard-rock track from this band.
9. "Miss the Misery"
Holy Visage rates this song: ★ ★ ★
Another hard-rock song which somewhat reminds us again of the grunge days. The song consists of heavy, dark sounding guitars, heavy drums, strong vocals, and impressive bass grooves. The song tells of a rejected man who longs for the dysfunction of a failed relationship, and the loneliness and sadness that he faces after its abrubt ending. Later in the song, anger towards this failed love come out in sarcastic words that hint at violence and suicide. Overall, this song is a great effort and will be loved by fans of this band, and fans of hard-rock music.
10. "I Should Have Known"
Holy Visage rates this song: ★ ★ ★
This song introduces a slow-tempo that the album hadn't consisted of before, though it picks up pace as the song continues. The chorus of this song is potentially one of the most beautiful melodies that we have heard from this band in years. Other than the chorus, however, we didn't find greater excellence here. This song is yet another song that expresses the grief of a man who is in a relationship that is no longer in session. However, we hear the man longing for one last touch before moving on. We understand that she has hurt him so badly that he is unwilling to forgive her. All together, this song is a geniusly composed track, gradually increasing in tempo and volume. It is definitely recommended for your ears to hear.
11. "Walk"
Holy Visage rates this song: ★ ★ ★ ★
A great album-closer. This song continues the slower-pace of this album. It begins with mild instruments and strong vocals, but picks up volume and pace as it progresses. This song is genuinely hopeful. The song speaks of starting over and finding hope after a disorienting and dark period of one's life. The song also mentions prayer in its bridge. This song closes this album in magnificent fashion; a superlative ending to a superlative album.
Fans of this band waited many years for the release of this album, and it's safe to say that it didn't disappoint. Again, the entire album was recorded on analog tape in frontman Dave Grohl's garage. That fact is simple proof of this band's ability to go beyond the efforts of every other rock band of this day and age. The album is magnificent from the opening scream to the final guitar strum. This album is definitely worth your money, and if you make the decision to make a great investment of your money by buying this album, we promise you that you will not be disappointed.
